I am a qualified actuary with a PhD in actuarial mathematics. I have practical experience and many publications in different aspects of actuarial science, such as: mortality analysis, investment risk, inflation indices, pension systems, and investment strategies.

I am Emeritus Professor in Actuarial Mathematics in the UCD School of Mathematics & Statistics (retired in August 2024), and former Head of the Department of Statistics & Actuarial Science. I currently advise the Central Statistics Office (Ireland) on mortality forecasting, am frequently called as an expert witness to the High Court in Ireland in the assessment of damages for personal injury, and previously have advised the Irish Government on pension matters. I served on the Council of the Actuarial Profession in both Ireland and the UK and was the Managing Editor of the British Actuarial Journal for several years.

Prior to my academic career, I worked for over a decade in institutional fund management, first as an Investment Analyst and later Fund Manager of Fixed Interest Securities (New Ireland Investment Managers), and then as an Investment Strategist and later Deputy Investment Director (Friends First Asset Managers).
